What importing actually costs
A sealed hobby box listed at USD 300 in an American shop does not cost you USD 300. By the time it reaches Dubai, the price has picked up four extra layers:
- International shipping — insured courier from the US typically runs USD 30–60 for a single box, more for anything heavy like a case.
- Customs duty — the UAE applies a standard 5% duty on most imported goods above the low-value threshold, calculated on the CIF value (cost + insurance + freight). Trading cards have no special exemption.
- Import VAT — 5% VAT applies on import, again on the value including shipping.
- Courier clearance fees — DHL, FedEx and Aramex charge a brokerage or "disbursement" fee for clearing customs on your behalf, commonly AED 50–150 per shipment, collected before they deliver.
Worked example: a USD 300 box with USD 45 shipping has a CIF value of about AED 1,270. Add 5% duty (~AED 63), 5% VAT on the lot (~AED 67) and a AED 100 clearance fee, and the box lands at roughly AED 1,500 — about 21% over sticker. None of this appears at the foreign shop's checkout; the courier bills you at the door.
The risks money can't fix
Cost aside, importing sealed product carries risks that a refund can't undo. Summer courier trucks and holding facilities in the Gulf regularly exceed 50°C — enough to warp cards and melt the glue on packs. Boxes travel thousands of kilometres through multiple handlers, and a crushed corner on sealed product permanently cuts its collectible value. And if a shipment goes missing, you're filing claims across two jurisdictions.
